Don A. McCullough Attorney at Law

Denver, CO

What makes me happy are the people in my life. I truly value my relationships with my family, my friends, and my clients. Many of my clients have become my good friends. Maintaining longtime friendships is very important to me, and my many friendships make my life very fun, rewarding, interesting, and entertaining. I have maintained strong friendships from childhood, high school, college, law school, and my law practice. If you look at my reviews, you will see how much I cherish my relationships.

After graduating from Englewood High School, I attended Colorado State University. I originally majored in finance because I thought I would like to be a stockbroker. I did very well in beginning accounting classes and changed my major to accounting upon my accounting professor’s recommendation. Changing majors was one of my best decisions because I learned all about accounting and how important it is to have a deep understanding of financial matters and financial statements when I help review and solve clients’ legal matters. At Colorado State University, I was a member of Beta Alpha Psi, the honorary accounting fraternity relating to academic excellence.

For law school, I heeded “go West young man” and attended the University of the Pacific, McGeorge School of Law in Sacramento, California. While in law school, my partner and I received the award for best brief in the Moot Court Competition.

After law school, I passed the California bar examination before moving back to Denver, and I am currently an inactive member of the California bar. Right after law school I opened up my own law office in downtown Denver at the bank building located at 17th and Welton. My first office did not even have a window, but I did not care because I had my very own office!!  Very few law graduates are bold enough to open his or her own law office right out of law school, but I was willing to take that bold step, and it has worked out really well for me.

During law school, I sat for the Certified Public Accountant examination and passed the examination on my first sitting. I was among the 20% who pass the CPA examination on the first attempt. I remain a Certified Public Accountant (Inactive), and being a Certified Public Accountant helps me tremendously in my law practice.

When I returned to Denver after law school, I served as an Adjunct Professor of Law and an Adjunct Professor of Accounting at Columbia College for several years while building my law practice. For my accounting students, I made sure that they understood the very important concept that debits are on the window side and credits are on the door side, or is it the other way around?

I worked very hard growing up, which accounts for my strong work ethic that I have always had with my law practice. When I was 13, I had a paper route for the Rocky Mountain News (I am a night person and did not like waking up early every morning to deliver the paper) and during high school I worked 35 hours a week at a grocery store (I still don’t know how I made it through high school working that much).

I understand how important laughter is for one’s health. I love to go out for lunch with my friends and laugh and enjoy each other’s company. Almost every lunch I enjoy being with a friend. One of my favorite things to do is for my wife and me to invite friends over for dinner and we enjoy with our friends an evening full of great food, drink, fun and laughter. I am so fortunate that my wife is an excellent cook!! I can barely boil water.

I enjoy spending time with my family and my friends; participating in and watching sports, including anything with a ball (well maybe not bowling so much); shooting hoops; walking for one and one half hours each day when weather allows with my son’s Golden Retriever, Booker; bicycling; traveling; and searching out my next meal because I am a true foodie. When I finish lunch, I literally start thinking about dinner and what I would like for dinner. If you want any recommendations on the best Ethiopian, sushi, or Italian restaurant in Denver, I will happily give you my much researched advice.

Do not be startled when you call me and I answer my phone because I always answer my own phone.

One fun, final fact about me is that I was born on Friday the 13th, and 13 is my lucky number.
